MHL Trophy Case Avalanche – North Leeds Tournament A Finalists!

As our team photographer Irv Osterer, aptly stated, “The Nepean Avalanche represented the NMHA with distinction today. We came up a little short in the Final, but had a solid tournament.” Early February 14th, the Midget B Nepean Avalanche team made their way from Nepean out to Westport for the North Leeds tournament.  It was an early start with more than a few players arriving bleary-eyed.  After a quick warm-up, the team was wide-awake and ready to play the host North Leeds team!  We started strong with our first goal by Phil Grant (assisted by Adam Sherman) at 8:45 of the first period.  Before the first period ended, we had added goals by Francis Campeau (assisted by Ian MacFayden), Jacob Lewrey (assisted by Chris Brunet and Jared Moss) and Ian McFayden (assisted by Nicholas Campeau and Phillip Sottile).  At the start of the second period we were up 4 to 1 and all of the lines were scoring!  In the second we doubled our score with goals by Jared Moss (assisted by Chris Brunet and Jacob Lewrey), Tyler Jordan (assisted by Jared Moss and Chris Brunet), Chris Brunet (assisted by Jacob Lewrey) and Michael Hunter (assisted by Adam Sherman).  Our defense and goalie Adam Zullo managed to keep the opposition off the scoreboard in the second and we ended the period 8-1.  Ian MacFayden (assisted by Adam Sherman) opened the scoring in the third period and Jacob Lewrey (assisted by Phil Grant) topped off the Avalanche scoring with a hat trick!
After a rest, some refueling and with the addition of a couple of players who hadn’t been able to make the first game the Avalanche were ready to hit the ice again versus the Brockville Braves.  The first period was filled with lots of great end-to-end plays and a few good scoring chances, but both goalies were able to keep the puck out of the back of the net.  The second period remained tied at 0 until the 2-minute mark when Brockville was able to score. The teams continued to battle hard and with just 52 seconds left in the third period the Avalanche scored to tie the game and force a shoot out!  The first Avalanche shooter Robbie Osterer scored, while our goalie, Adam Zullo made a save at his end.  The second Avalanche shooter Phil Grant scored as did the Brockville player.  Now, Brockville had to score to tie the shootout. The third Avalanche shooter, Ian MacFayden was stopped by the Brockville goalie, but Adam Zullo made an amazing save, snatching the puck off the line to seal the Avalanche shoot-out win!
While we waited to find out our standing in the finals, the team enjoyed lunch at Steve’s in Westport.  Before lunch was finished, we were confirmed in the A finals set for 4pm.
With plenty of rest, the Avalanche took to the ice to play the Richmond Royals.  The Royals were the first team on the scoreboard with a goal at the 4-minute mark of the first.  The Avalanche answered with 1:35 remaining in the first with a goal by Jared Moss (assisted by Chris Brunet) but unfortunately w ere kept off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, ultimately losing 5-1.  It was a hard-fought game and an excellent day of hockey for all of the fans who where there to enjoy it!

MHL News VAN a night to remember

On February 6th, the NMHA held their annual Volunteer Appreciation Night.  Three of our Midget volunteers were among the names chosen to be honoured.  Unfortunately all three could not be present to receive their awards.  All three were surprised when we presented their awards at their next game, with players and parents in attendance.  Congratulations to:

Mike Milinkovich - Head Coach Midget A Team A
Bob Swan - Head Coach Midget B Team C
Pat Owen - Manager Midget B Team C

MHL Trophy Case Midget B Phantoms Celebrate a great weekend !

Congratulations to the Midget B Phantoms on their outstanding performance in the Midget B division of the Capital House League Championships Tournament at the Bell Sensplex on the weekend of February 5-7.  The Phantoms played 6 fabulous games in 3 days, including quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals on Sunday February 7.

In the round-robin, the Phantoms defeated the Kanata B3 team 6-1, the Canterbury B2 team 6-4 and the Dollard Cavaliers 7-1.  In the quarter-finals, they defeated the Canterbury B2 team 4-2, and then triumphed 4-2 over the West Ferris Stallions in a very thrilling penalty-free semi-final game.  The Championship game against the St. Alphonsus Sharks was tied 1-1 until late in the game when the Sharks scored to win the game 2-1.

The Phantoms led all Midget B teams in goals scored and had 7 of the tournament’s top 25 scorers.   Many thanks to the parents of the Phantoms for their support over a very busy 3 days.

The Phantoms who participated in the tournament include:  Colin Redden, Jordon Milks, Josh Campbell, Josh Hopkins, Josh Walton, Matt Leclair, Nick Bourdon, Nico Bidin, Richard Conn, Scott Genereux, Spencer Asch-Jones and Travis Swan.   Adam Earnshaw and David Trakalo joined the team as affiliate players for the tournament.

Ice/Game Updates Time for a Review...

Playoffs are almost upon us…
We all love the game of hockey. The excitement and the intensity of the game gets our juices going. We get emotional and sometimes forget about some key points…

Fun -   Safety -   Good Sportsmanship

First and foremost – Hockey is a game!
Calls are made, and calls are missed - this will always be the case...
Believe it or not, everybody strives to do their best. We will not always agree with every call but “Respect “is always demanded from everybody involved – Players – Coaches – Parents – Officials.

We all signed a Code of Conduct …

There is zero tolerance for any abuse against  Players – Coaches – Parents – Officials…
Zero tolerance for racial slurs… (Gross Misconduct can be called if heard by official…)

Reminder: Coaches have been instructed to sit any player who is getting overly agitated or aggressive until such a time that he is able to regain control.
Should the player refuse, he can, and will be instructed to
leave the game and proceed to his dressing room.

So please cheer loudly for your teams!
Please enjoy the great plays made by all!
Please appreciate and support the effort made
by everyone to make this a
Safe, Fun and Exiting end of season!
